Make 2014 the year it happens
Every year for as long as I can remember I vowed that this would be the year I would get slim and lose the weight for good. January is when the nerd in me comes out. I get busy with weight loss plans laid out in Excel with target weights, timeframes, measurements, goals, graphs, ……. you get the picture. Planning is what I am good at. Unfortunately the actual implementation and results always fell dramatically short of my goals. By March I was frustrated and hungry and if I was lucky only 1 kilo lighter.
In hindsight, it wasn’t my lack of willpower or the complexity of my plans that lead to poor results. In actual fact, I never ‘failed’. It was the diets that failed me. None of them were right for me. For my metabolism. None of them helped me overcome my addiction to carbs. Thank goodness I discovered paleo, primal, LCHF!
2014 is going to be all about ACTIONS and not GOALS. I have a feeling that if I commit to the actions, the goals will take care of themselves. No more spreadsheets to mess with my mind!
Consistent action is what changes habits and good habits are the foundation of health. So, take a little time for reflection. Do you have habits that are sabotaging your efforts to get healthy and slim?
If you battle with cravings for carbs and sugar which renders your willpower completely useless, then maybe it is time for a change.
What actions are you going to take to make 2014 different from all the others?
Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Stop making excuses
- Avoid sugar in all its many guises (artificial sweeteners included)
- Stop eating grains (pasta, rice, bread, crackers, cereals)
- Reduce or eliminate alcohol
- Keep away from processed food
- Eat fewer carbs and more healthy fat
- Believe in yourself and trust the process
I am ever hopeful that 2014 will be my year! The year I reach my healthy ideal weight. There is something infinitely exciting about the start of a new year. It is a blank canvas ready for a beautiful masterpiece.
Good luck everyone. I hope 2014 is going to be an awesome year for you.

How do you get your head around the increase fat thing- having been indoctrinated to low fat, even family frown if I eat fat?
Sue, that is SUCH an excellent question. One has to really educate oneself regarding why fat is good for us and why it helps us to lose weight. So read as much as you can on the topic. Armed with this information you can put those “frowns” in their place. Fat makes you feel fuller for longer and therefore you very often eat much less on LCHF. Also fat does not cause blood sugar to spike which means insulin is kept under control. Controlled insulin means your body is not constantly sending signals to store fat. Fat is critical for the brain and other important body functions. It does seem totally counter-intuitive to eat fat to lose fat but when you understand the science it makes it very easy to get your head around it. Besides once you start losing weight, other people wont be so critical of what you are eating. They will more than likely sit up and take notice. Good luck.
