Why you should be supplementing with magnesium

It is no exaggeration to refer to magnesium as the miracle mineral. Dr Carolyn Dean, a medical doctor, naturopath and nutritionist wrote an entire book on the subject which she aptly titled, “The Magnesium Miracle”.  This article references her work on magnesium and provides insights as to why it is so critical for treating many of today’s chronic conditions such as acid reflux, adrenal fatigue, angina, anxiety, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, constipation, depression, type 2 diabetes, obesity, fibromyalgia and many more.  Magnesium is responsible for over 300 life-providing reactions in our body, yet most of us are magnesium deficient. Many of us severely so.  Our nervous system, bones, muscles, heart, brain and other organs all require magnesium to function well.  If we are going to avoid chronic and debilitating illness it is important to understand why we are deficient and what can be done about it.

Fix your hormones with fibre

Most of us don’t spend much time contemplating our body’s complex hormonal systems.  Even when we are displaying the outward signs of hormonal imbalance, fixing the underlying root cause is not always top of mind.  Popping a pill for menstrual cramps, or drinking caffeine all day long to stay awake, are just some of the “quick fix” solutions that our society gravitates towards these days.  Unfortunately, these quick fixes do not resolve the reasons why your hormones are out of whack in the first place.  One hormone that is responsible for much of the distress is estrogen. Both men and women have this important hormone, but when it becomes dominant in relation to progesterone and testosterone, problems start to arise.

Am I in ketosis and does it matter?

Hello everybody and happy 2017 to all of you. May this be the year for achieving your goals and realising all your dreams for health and wellness. I hope you find this article of value since there is  much confusion out there with regards to what ketosis is, why you might want to try ketosis, how to get into ketosis as well as how to test for it.

What is ketosis?

When you go very low carb, your insulin levels drop.  This allows your body to start burning your stored fat for fuel, and very effectively melts those extra kilos away.  As long as insulin stays high due to a high carb intake, weight loss is going to elude you.  Your body has an amazing ability to convert its engine from petrol (carbs) to diesel (fat).  It is a totally natural process, and has enabled humans to endure times of famine all through the ages.  Today, researchers are discovering that keto-adaptation has other therapeutic benefits that go beyond mere survival. I was doing keto wrong

What I want to share with you in this post is very important if you are trying to follow a very low carb, high fat diet. Ketogenic diets are becoming very popular due to the fantastic weight loss and health improvement results people are experiencing.  They really do work very well, but only if you do it properly. If you don’t you can damage your metabolism, adrenals, thyroid and upset your hormones. It happened to me so I am speaking from first-hand experience. You need to know what you are doing and you need to KEEP doing it. What was my mistake? I wasn’t eating enough fat or enough calories (and I wasn’t properly keto-adapted). Everything changed for me when I was privileged enough to spend time with US expert Keto Coach, Stephanie Person, when she visited South Africa in May. Read the rest of this entry

DIET is an action word

I have given this a lot of thought, and in this post I would like to share my insights with you. The battle against the bulge is one that I have been fighting since I was a child. At times, life’s hurdles made me feel like I was truly fighting a losing battle. Years of fertility treatments, 2 pregnancies, and a hormonal disorder certainly doesn’t bode well for obtaining the slim physique I have always dreamed about. However, my long journey has been an education I wouldn’t want to have missed out on had weight loss and improved health come too easily. Every day I thank God for his blessings and guidance, which assures me that I am not walking this road alone. Read the rest of this entry
