About me

Hello Everyone, my nane is Nicky Perks. I am a 47 years old. I lived most of my life in Cape Town and more recently we moved to Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route. I have been married to my wonderful hubby for 20 years and feel blessed to be mom to two beautiful girls.  My family –  my inspiration!

In a nutshell, I am very passionate about health and how the food we choose to put into our bodies affects so many aspects of our lives, and especially the lives of our children.

First off, I need to begin by stating that I am not a nutritionist, doctor, dietician or scientist. I am just a “well padded” girl who has been on a mission since I was 12 years old to be slim, healthy and happy.

In the last few years I have been devouring nutrition books, articles, pod casts and seminars and along the way I have come across information that I feel is too valuable not to share with others. This information will not be conventional, main stream or even very popular with your doctor. It will probably ruffle your feathers and make you squirm with discomfort. Please, hang in there!

I have fought my fair share of battles. Infertility, hormone injections, 9 artificial inseminations, 1 IVF, mood swings, fatigue,

allergies, obesity, insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, rising cholesterol and triglycerides levels, PCOS, extremely painful gall bladder attacks and eventually surgery to remove my gall bladder.

The war is not yet over but there have definitely been many victories and blessings along the way. For the first time, I feel that I have the right weapons to use in defending my health and that of my family’s.

I would like to share some of the benefits I have gained personally from adopting a “primal” way of eating:

  • Reversed the onset of type 2 diabetes
  • Lost weight
  • Skin is brighter and clearer
  • Stronger immune system as I hardly ever get sick
  • No longer suffer from chronic hay fever
  • More even moods
  • Way more energy – no more afternoon energy slumps
  • No more bloating or cramping after meals
  • Feel younger and more vital

The work in progress.

I love good food, red wine and chocolate. I am still very much a work in progress.  I haven’t figured it all out yet. It is not about being perfect all the time but about making good choices most of the time. To make good choices one needs to be well-informed and hence my reasons for writing this blog.

The goal of this blog?

  • To share what I have read and learned over the years
  • To empower people to take more control over their own health
  • To motivate myself and others to hunt and gather in our modern world!

I hope you enjoy it…..

Well done, Nicky, for getting this going! Will definitely browse through it!

  5. Thanks Nicky for all the work you had done to put forward such relevant info. I will certainly pass it on. It is so sensible for young mums to invest in their kids’ wellbeing by taking care what to feed the little ones. You cannot start a healthy lifestyle too early!

  6. Hi Nicky, your brother directed me to your blog a while ago, and I have been a silent reader, but I love your attitude and approach, so I have an award for you! Check it out here – http://wp.me/pAcE1-16s

  7. Thanks, Nicky. I can identify with your journey. I had a difficult pregnancy 30 years ago – bed rest, cortisone, progesterone that left me with a weight problem and onset type 2 diabetes. Your blog is a motivating and inspiring. Once again, thank you.

  8. Hi Nicky

I suffer from Narcolepsy – also a mom of 41 years old with two daughters 11 and 9. I am a personal trainer and always followed a reasonably healthy diet of Low Gi and Low Fat.Free etc. I am not grossly overweight just a few kilos to lose but have been put on Banting Regime by a nutritionist to see whether this helps me with my Narcolepsy – what do you think? I am not convinced.

    • Hi Belinda, you have nothing to lose by trying the Banting diet. You might be surprised at how great it will make you feel. It is a very healthy way of eating for everyone. I say go for it.

  9. Hi Nicky
It’s Louise Corrans Hughes here, the lady from the South Coast. Just stopped by your blog to read it. I too have a blog – http://louisesheartlove.blogspot.co.za/
You are welcome to check it out. Seems we are very similar personalities. Have a super day. xxx
